She is a 52-year-old woman from Calgary, Alberta, a mother of two, and the sister of the X user @KristaFinBC. Her sister describes her as fit, someone who worked out four days a week. Her name has not been made public.
In 2026 she was diagnosed with cancer, later described as stage 3/4 pancreatic cancer. Within weeks, before she had ever met an oncologist, she had been offered MAID twice, and a nurse had called her to discuss palliative care. “She’s been offered MAiD twice and was called by a nurse to discuss her palliative care last week. Yesterday she met with the oncologist for THE FIRST time,” her sister wrote. An oncologist in Calgary then told her she had “zero chance of beating it.”
Her family did not accept that. Soon afterwards they were in the United States, getting her treated. “We’re here in the US getting medical treatment for my sister after she was offered MAiD twice and spoke to palliative care before seeing an oncologist in Alberta,” her sister wrote. After care in Arizona, including chemotherapy, her sister wrote later that year that she is well.
“Healthcare in Canada is beyond broken,” her sister wrote. And: “After my sister was offered MAiD twice in Calgary before seeing an oncologist, we were so thankful we could get good treatment in Arizona.”
She did not ask for MAID. It was raised with her twice before anyone had discussed cancer treatment with her, and offering death before treatment tells a newly diagnosed patient that dying is the expected path. She was offered death twice before she was offered treatment. With treatment, she is alive and well.
