Case reference: MAID-BC-2025-6FRA · Vancouver, British Columbia · Died by MAID · Recorded by the register as a MAID victim
Who he was
Shawn Bauman lived on Vancouver Island. He was 55, a father of two daughters. He had survived cancer and heart surgery. His ex-wife, Lori Bauman, the mother of his daughters, says he was a heavy drinker and not in the best of health, but that nothing indicated the end was near. He was not terminally ill.
What happened
On 9 May 2025 he fell at home and hurt his ribs. He was X-rayed at emergency, told it was bruising, and discharged. He went back the same day, trembling and sweating, with pain at the base of his neck. A CT scan found a compression fracture at T3; a neurosurgeon decided surgery was not required, and he was sent home with a list of painkillers and muscle relaxants.
The next day his legs gave out. He lost all movement and sensation in both legs at once and lay on the floor for two hours until his roommate came home and called an ambulance. New scans found a large epidural hematoma, a collection of blood around the spinal cord, from T4 to T11. An emergency physician on the Island got Vancouver General Hospital’s spine service on the phone, and VGH accepted him for emergency transfer to relieve the compression.
The family says that once he reached Vancouver, they were never given a report and never spoke to a single member of his medical team. When his daughter reached him, he told her he was too drugged up to talk. The emergency surgery, as far as the family knows, was never performed. A friend told them MAID had come up. On the evening of 20 May his daughter got a call: it was scheduled for the next morning. Shawn Bauman died by MAID on 21 May 2025, twelve days after his fall.
Why they were pushed toward MAID
Shawn Bauman went to Vancouver for an operation to save the use of his legs and was given death instead. Twelve days from a fall to a lethal injection is impossible on Track 2, with its 90-day minimum, unless that period was cut short, so someone found that the natural death of a man just accepted for emergency surgery was reasonably foreseeable. His family has never been shown a page of that decision.
His daughter asked Vancouver General for his records. The hospital acknowledged she may be an appropriate person to act for him, then refused her on the grounds that she wanted them for her own reasons. A coroner opened an investigation; fifteen months later the family has no report. The care he received on the Island is being reported to Island Health’s Patient Care Quality Office, and Lori Bauman has also gone to the Ombudsman. Island Health, Vancouver Coastal Health and the BC Coroners Service did not answer questions put to them by the reporter.
What their family says
“His ex-wife says she wanted to shout don’t do it,” Kelsi Sheren wrote of Lori Bauman’s account. The family were offered the chance to stay on the phone while it happened and said no; she did not want that to be her daughters’ last memory of their father. On the morning he died, he told them he was proud to donate his eyes, calling it his “last little contribution to society.”
What this case shows
Shawn Bauman fell in his living room and was dead by MAID inside two weeks, after a surgery meant to save him apparently never took place. His case shows how fast MAID can move for a person who is not dying, and how families are shut out of the records that would explain it.
