The Beef Industry Lie: High Emissions, Low Value, And Government Protection

This isn’t policy. This is a disgraceful, taxpayer-funded betrayal of every Australian family, farmer, and future generation. While the government lectures us about “net zero” and slaps carbon taxes on everything that moves, it quietly props up two of the dirtiest, most inefficient, most environmentally destructive beef pathways on the planet — live cattle exports and subsidised Wagyu production on public land — and dares us to notice.
Live cattle exports are nothing short of environmental and economic treason. Diesel-guzzling ships haul live animals halfway around the world in conditions that would make a battery hen blush. Zero value is added here in Australia. Jobs? Shipped offshore. Tax revenue? Squandered. Emissions? Skyrocketing. Animal welfare? A national embarrassment.
Yet the government keeps the subsidies flowing, the export licences rubber-stamped, and the ports open. Why? Because a handful of vested interests have the ministers on speed-dial, while the rest of us pay the price at the petrol pump and in our lungs.
Even worse is the quiet scandal of Wagyu and Wagyu-cross production on public leasehold land. These hyper-inefficient, ultra-high-emission beasts are literally being subsidised by you and me — grazing on land we all own — to produce meat so ridiculously expensive that ordinary Australians can’t afford it, so fatty it’s a heart-attack on a plate, and so carbon-intensive it makes a coal-fired power station look green.
This isn’t “premium beef.”
This is a luxury boondoggle dressed up as agriculture, funded by public money, and protected by policy capture at the highest levels.
And where is the ABC — the so-called national broadcaster that loves to lecture us about “public interest” and “holding power to account”?
Crickets.
Deafening, cowardly silence. Not a single hard-hitting investigation. Not one forensic exposé on the emissions, the welfare horrors, the lost domestic processing jobs, or the grotesque misallocation of public resources.
Their silence isn’t journalism. It’s complicity. It’s active shielding of a broken, high-emission, low-productivity system that screws Australian consumers, workers, taxpayers, and the climate they claim to care about.
This is not incompetence. This is wilful negligence — a government that has chosen to protect the sacred cows of a handful of big players over the health, wallets, and future of the Australian people.
Every dollar funnelled into these pathways is a dollar stolen from:
- Genuine domestic processing
- Cleaner supply chains
- Affordable, healthier beef for families
- Real emissions reductions that actually matter
Enough. Australians are sick of being treated like cash cows while our government props up environmental vandalism and economic self-harm.
Demand answers.
Demand alternatives:
- Slash diesel waste
- Bring processing home
- Grow GDP instead of shipping it overseas
- Deliver beef that’s actually nutritious and affordable
Not some taxpayer-subsidised indulgence for the elite.
The government isn’t “supporting agriculture.”
It’s selling us out.
And the ABC isn’t “balanced.”
It’s in on the con.
Time to call it what it is: a national scandal.
