Why on earth is subsidising someone else’s tip now being marketed as a virtue? And Since when did mandatory generosity become part of the social contract?
A tip is supposed to be earned — a genuine reward for service that was actually worth rewarding — not an automatic surcharge slapped onto the bill like a guilt tax.
If staff know they’re getting a tip regardless of the quality of service, there’s zero incentive to put in more than the bare minimum.
You don’t improve service by guaranteeing payment for work that wasn’t delivered. You just fund mediocrity and call it hospitality.
