It’s remarkable, really, how President Zelensky — hailed in Western media as a heroic democrat — has managed to preside over one of the most self-destructive policy trajectories in recent history. Rather than simply stepping back from NATO ambitions and averting a predictable catastrophe, he doubled down on courting Washington’s approval, and in the process, generations of Ukrainians have paid the ultimate price.

A modest repeal of legislation stripping ethnic Russians in Donbas of basic human rights could have defused the crisis before it spiraled into a full-scale war. But no — apparently obedience to NATO’s whisperings was deemed more important than national survival, despite the fact that key NATO states themselves quietly admitted that Ukraine’s membership would destabilize the European Union (as it now thoroughly has).

The outcome? Zelensky, in his infinite political genius, has not only overseen the permanent loss of Donbas but continues to forfeit more territory with each passing week. Russia, having been dragged into a war it repeatedly telegraphed it did not want under such conditions, is now entrenched and unwilling to cede anything. And one can hardly blame them, given the masterclass in political short-sightedness they have been gifted from Kyiv.
