Nobody Is Above the Law — Even Lawmakers

Public officials love to lecture citizens about responsibility, integrity, and the rule of law. Yet when the spotlight turns toward some of those very officials, the hypocrisy can be staggering. Three Georgia state lawmakers have now been charged in federal cases tied to fraudulent claims for pandemic unemployment assistance — money that was meant to help struggling Americans survive one of the most disruptive economic periods in modern history.

According to federal prosecutors, three Democratic Georgia State Representatives — Karen Bennett, Sharon Henderson, and Dexter Sharper — allegedly took taxpayer-funded relief while they were still employed and drawing salaries as elected officials. The accusations are not vague political mudslinging; they come from formal federal indictments and guilty pleas.

Former Rep. Karen Bennett

Former Georgia State Representative Karen Bennett (D–Stone Mountain) pleaded guilty in January 2026 to making false statements in order to obtain pandemic unemployment benefits.

Prosecutors say Bennett collected about $13,940 in unemployment assistance while she was still employed as a sitting state legislator. She resigned from office just days before the charges were formally announced.

Rep. Sharon Henderson

Rep. Sharon Henderson (D–Covington) was indicted in December 2025 on charges including theft of government funds and false statements.

Federal prosecutors allege Henderson fraudulently obtained approximately $17,811 in pandemic unemployment benefits by falsely claiming employment status. Following the indictment, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp suspended her from office in January 2026 pending the outcome of the case.

Rep. Dexter Sharper

Rep. Dexter Sharper (D–Valdosta) was charged in January 2026 with making false statements in connection with pandemic unemployment assistance.

According to prosecutors, Sharper allegedly applied for and received benefits between April 2020 and May 2021 while actively serving in the Georgia legislature.

The Real Issue: Abuse of Public Trust

These cases are about far more than a few thousand dollars. They strike directly at the foundation of public trust.

The pandemic relief programs were created to help ordinary workers suddenly thrown out of jobs — small business employees, gig workers, and people whose industries shut down overnight. For elected officials earning government salaries to allegedly tap into those funds is not just unethical — it is a betrayal of the very people they were elected to represent.

The rule of law only means something if it applies to everyone. No politician, no party, no office holder should ever be above it. If the accusations are proven, these lawmakers did not merely break rules — they abused a system meant to protect the public during a national emergency.

Why Was This Not Headline News Everywhere?

Perhaps the most disturbing question is not that these charges occurred — corruption exists in every political system. The real question is why this story has not dominated national headlines.

When misconduct fits certain political narratives, coverage often explodes across television panels, front pages, and endless commentary cycles. Yet in this case — three sitting lawmakers charged in federal court over pandemic relief fraud — the story received relatively limited national attention.

Americans deserve consistent scrutiny of those in power regardless of party affiliation. Selective outrage only deepens public cynicism and erodes faith in institutions.

If democracy is supposed to function properly, accountability cannot be optional and media attention cannot be selective.

The Bottom Line

The message from these cases should be simple and unequivocal:

Public office is not a shield from the law. It is a position of trust.

If that trust is abused, the consequences must be swift and transparent — not quietly buried in legal filings while the public looks the other way.

No matter the title, no matter the party, and no matter the office held, nobody is above the law.
